Remember Me Toronto Curriculum Toolkit
Using art and storytelling to challenge stereotypes and address gun violence.

Background
Lunarsol collaborated with Mustafa the Poet to develop the Remember Me Toronto Curriculum Toolkit, an educational resource designed to foster dialogue around gun violence, identity, and community resilience. Inspired by Mustafa’s Remember Me video, the toolkit aims to challenge stereotypes surrounding urban violence and celebrate the humanity and creativity of impacted communities.

Approach
The curriculum offers educators tools to engage students in critical conversations through art and storytelling. Designed for flexibility, the toolkit includes:
- Poetry and Visual Arts Exercises: Students explore themes of identity, community, and resilience by creating original poetry and collages inspired by the Remember Me video.
- Media Literacy and Critical Thinking: Activities challenge students to analyze media portrayals of violence and rethink narratives around marginalized communities.
- Intergenerational Knowledge Exchange: A homework assignment encourages students to interview older family or community members, fostering dialogue on community history and the impact of violence.
- Canadian Gun Violence Fact Sheet: A resource to ground discussions in real-world data and broaden understanding of gun violence as a public health issue.
The toolkit emphasizes self-expression, critical engagement, and community connection, empowering students to tell their own stories and envision positive change.
Impact
The Remember Me Toronto Curriculum Toolkit has been implemented in schools and community spaces across Toronto, encouraging meaningful conversations about gun violence and systemic oppression. Students have used art and storytelling to challenge stereotypes, share personal experiences, and reimagine their communities, fostering empathy, understanding, and resilience.
