Background

Woman, Life, Freedom: A global solidarity action for and with Iranian women and girls asserting their human rights. It began with nationwide protests in Iran, ignited by the tragic death of Mahsa Jina Amini in police custody for not covering her hair. This initiative, including petitions, demonstrations, and a political campaign, raised awareness of violence against women in Iran and called for the removal of Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Approach

Lunarsol worked with Vital Voices, and For Freedoms, to mobilize a global coalition of Iranian women leaders, artists, political leader, activists, and lawyers to raising urgent awareness for the campaign in solidarity with women in Iran.  We conceptualized and coordinated the efforts to create a two page centerfold spread in the New York Times, artwork for a social media campaign and website where signatures were gathered for the petition, art installations and actions at Four Freedoms Park, and aerial billboard actions around the Statue of Liberty and on the Hudson river shining light on the injustice towards women in Iran.  This project had a direct call to action to remove Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

Impact

In December of 2022, the United Nations Economic and Social Council adopted a resolution to remove Iran from the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the remainder of its term ending in 2026.
